Philadelphia Chinatown Stitch Project Receives $10M to Continue Design Phase

[VT | March 23, 2026 | Philadelphia PA]

The Chinatown Stitch project in Philadelphia has received approximately $10 million in new regional funding, allowing the project to continue advancing through its design phase following the loss of previously awarded federal funding.

According to regional planning authorities, the funding will support engineering and final design work over the next stage of the project. The City of Philadelphia is expected to provide additional matching funds to support this phase.

The Chinatown Stitch project proposes constructing a cap over a հատված of the I-676 (Vine Street Expressway) that runs through Chinatown. The project aims to create new public space above the highway and improve physical connectivity between areas currently separated by the roadway.

The newly approved funding is designated for design and project development. It does not cover construction costs.

The project had previously been awarded approximately $159 million in federal funding. That funding was later rescinded through federal budget actions affecting unobligated infrastructure funds. As a result, the project lost its primary source of construction funding.

With the current funding, project stakeholders are proceeding with design work in order to bring the project to a “shovel-ready” stage. This means the project would be prepared to begin construction if future funding becomes available.

The total estimated cost of the project remains significantly higher than the funding currently secured. No timeline for construction has been confirmed based on currently available funding.
