Washington, January 15, 2025 — President Joe Biden announced today that Israel and Hamas have reached a ceasefire and hostage agreement, following months of intensive diplomacy led by the United States in collaboration with Egypt and Qatar. The deal, which will halt the fighting in Gaza, allow humanitarian aid to flow to Palestinian civilians, and reunite hostages with their families after more than 15 months in captivity, marks a significant step toward ending the violence and beginning peace efforts in the region.
President Biden outlined the details of the agreement in a statement, noting that it is the result of extensive diplomatic efforts, including the backing of the UN Security Council, as well as shifting regional dynamics and pressure on Hamas. He emphasized that American diplomacy remained steadfast throughout the negotiation process, leading to this breakthrough.
While celebrating the ceasefire, President Biden also acknowledged the painful loss suffered by families who lost loved ones in Hamas’s October 7th attack, as well as the many innocent lives lost during the subsequent conflict. He expressed particular concern for American families, with three hostages still alive in Gaza and four awaiting the return of remains. The President vowed that the United States will continue efforts to bring all hostages home.
“I am thrilled that those who have been held hostage are being reunited with their families,” said President Biden. He added that he would provide further details on the agreement soon but for now, expressed his relief at the progress made in securing the release of the hostages.
