The casket of former U.S. President Jimmy Carter arrived at the U.S. Capitol on Tuesday, January 7, for a ceremonial procession. The 39th president, who passed away on December 29, 2024, at the age of 100, was transported from Georgia to Washington, D.C., where his remains were carried in a horse-drawn caisson from the U.S. Navy Memorial to the Capitol steps.
Military personnel, including members of the U.S. Army Band, participated in the solemn procession, with spectators lining the streets despite the cold temperatures. Carter’s casket was received by military body bearers at the Capitol and carried into the rotunda, where it will lie in state until his state funeral on Thursday, January 9.
A guard of honor will maintain a vigil over the casket as members of the public are invited to pay their respects. Carter’s funeral arrangements began on January 4 with tributes in his hometown of Plains, Georgia, before his journey to the nation’s capital.
After the state funeral on January 9, Carter’s remains will return to Georgia for a private funeral at Maranatha Baptist Church and a final interment ceremony.
