Tri-Caucus and Congressional Progressive Caucus Demand Accountability After Fatal ICE Shooting in Minneapolis

[VT – Washington, D.C. January 8, 2026 ] — Leaders of the Congressional Tri-Caucus and the Congressional Progressive Caucus on Wednesday issued a joint statement expressing “deep sadness and outrage” over the fatal shooting of a woman by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents in Minneapolis, calling for immediate accountability and a suspension of ICE operations in Minnesota.

The statement was released by the chairs of the Congressional Tri-Caucus—Congressional Asian Pacific American Caucus Chair Grace Meng, Congressional Black Caucus Chair Yvette Clarke, and Congressional Hispanic Caucus Chair Adriano Espaillat—along with Congressional Progressive Caucus Deputy Chair Ilhan Omar.

“We are deeply saddened and outraged by the deadly ICE shooting that occurred yesterday,” the lawmakers said. “Renee Nicole Good should be alive today. Instead, her wife, children, and family are left to carry unimaginable grief and loss.”

The members of Congress said the shooting was not an isolated or unavoidable incident, but rather “the result of deliberate choices” made by former President Donald Trump and his administration. According to the statement, weeks of “inflamed tensions, hateful rhetoric, and intensified attacks on Minnesota and immigrant communities,” combined with what they described as ICE’s “increasingly violent actions and unchecked operations,” created the conditions that led to the fatal encounter.

The lawmakers emphasized that responsibility extends beyond the individual officer involved, pointing instead to broader federal policies and enforcement strategies. “This tragedy was not inevitable,” the statement read. “It is the direct consequence of political decisions that escalated fear and confrontation in our communities.”

The joint statement concluded with a unified demand for “real, immediate accountability” for ICE and called for the suspension of ICE operations in Minnesota while investigations continue.

The shooting, which occurred in south Minneapolis, has sparked widespread national attention and renewed debate over federal immigration enforcement. Federal and state authorities, including the FBI and Minnesota investigators, are continuing to examine the circumstances surrounding the incident.
