On Tuesday, March 26, 2024, the United States Department of Commerce convened a roundtable for minority entrepreneurs at the Philadelphia Enterprise Center. The event aimed to discuss economic opportunities, financial empowerment, and strategies for investing in communities across America.
Prior to the event, a press conference was held featuring Don Graves, Deputy Secretary of the United States Department of Commerce, Congressman Dwight Evans, and Della Clark, President of the Enterprise Center. Deputy Secretary Don Graves expressed gratitude to Della Clark for organizing the event and underscored the importance of fostering an inclusive economy that benefits all individuals.
Deputy Secretary Don Graves emphasized the positive impact of reducing systemic barriers and inequalities on driving economic growth. He noted that the unemployment rates in African American communities have reached historic lows, and the gap between African American and white communities is at its narrowest point in history. He also mentioned the diversity representation initiatives undertaken across all levels of government under the leadership of the Biden-Harris administration, as well as executive orders signed by President Biden focusing on fairness to ensure equal contracting opportunities for minority communities.
Congressman Dwight Evans affirmed the significance of the event, commending the efforts of the Enterprise Center in establishing funds and creating opportunities for African American entrepreneurs. He stressed the importance of wealth and opportunity within African American communities, and commended the Deputy Secretary and the Department of Commerce for their involvement in supporting small businesses.
Della Clark, President of the Enterprise Center, expressed delight in hosting the event and highlighted the center’s four focal areas: federal opportunities, business support ecosystems, capital environments, and intermediaries. She emphasized the need for resources and investments to aid in the growth and success of businesses.
During the Q&A session, reporters raised concerns about contracts between minority-owned businesses in Philadelphia and the government. Officials acknowledged past issues but expressed optimism for the future, praising the new mayor’s dedication to providing more opportunities for historically disadvantaged entrepreneurs and small businesses in the city.
