Hon. Julie Su, Speaking in Personal Capacity, Endorses Kamala Harris at National and Local Media Roundtable in English and Chinese

November 2, Philadelphia, PA – Hon. Julie Su, speaking in a personal capacity, attended a media roundtable in Philadelphia where she expressed her support for Kamala Harris’s presidential campaign. She emphasized the significance of this election for the Asian American community. Su noted that, as an Asian American, she felt disappointment with former President Donald Trump’s administration, especially regarding his treatment of the Asian community and the racial discrimination that escalated during the COVID-19 pandemic.

“We’re facing a candidate who has already been president, yet underperformed in a time of crisis,” Su said. “During Trump’s term, there was nearly daily escalation of hate directed at Asian Americans, making us feel unwelcome in this country.” She noted that Trump’s tendency to blame COVID-19 on China and Asians further fueled anti-Asian sentiment across the nation.

Su remarked that this election is not only about preventing Trump’s return but also about supporting a candidate who embodies diversity. She highlighted that Kamala Harris, as the daughter of immigrants and a long-standing public servant, is focused on key issues that matter to the Asian American community, such as affordable housing, small business support, and ensuring job stability. “These are all issues that resonate deeply with Asian American voters,” Su said.

Urging Asian American Voter Participation

Su stressed that Pennsylvania is one of the critical states in this election and that the voting power of the Asian American community could be decisive. “If every Asian American voter turns out, we can absolutely decide the outcome of this election,” she stated, encouraging Asian American voters to recognize their power and participate actively to advocate for their rights.

The roundtable also featured a core Democratic leader,  Ms. Bel Leong-HongDNC AAPI caucus, who further underscored the significance of Asian American participation in this election. Bel noted that Su’s position in the government has opened doors to high-level representation for the Asian American community, inspiring opportunities and visibility for the next generation. She pointed out that Trump’s administration had minimal Asian representation, while Harris’s campaign team and future administration would create more opportunities for all communities.

Su emphasized that the Asian American community is diverse in language, geography, and culture, making internal unity crucial. She added that unity requires a leader who understands and listens to the needs of the Asian community. “Kamala Harris’s election would be a historic moment, and her background and experiences uniquely position her to understand the challenges faced by minorities in America,” Su said.

On Immigration Policy

When asked about Harris’s stance on immigration policy, Su emphasized that Harris supports immigration reform aimed at strengthening border security while also providing pathways to legal status for young immigrants, including Dreamers under DACA. Su pointed out that Harris believes America can balance security with inclusivity, making immigrants feel respected rather than merely tolerated.

Closing Remarks

In closing, Su urged Asian American voters to recognize their influence and use their votes to support a more inclusive America. “We must make it clear that this is not the America we wish to see. We aspire to build a society that is more open, diverse, and inclusive,” she said.
