Karoline Claire Leavitt, born on August 24, 1997, in Atkinson, New Hampshire, is an American political aide who currently serves as the National Press Secretary for Donald Trump’s 2024 presidential campaign. She previously worked as an assistant press secretary and presidential writer during President Trump’s first administration.
Leavitt was raised in New Hampshire, where her family owned an ice cream shop and a used truck dealership. She attended Central Catholic High School in Lawrence, Massachusetts, and later went on to Saint Anselm College, where she earned Bachelor’s degrees in Communications and Political Science. While at college, Leavitt was an outspoken supporter of the Trump administration and founded the school’s first broadcasting club. She also interned at Hearst Television’s WMUR-TV in New Hampshire.
Career Path
After graduating in 2019, Leavitt briefly worked at the White House Presidential Correspondence Office before joining the White House Press Office as Assistant Press Secretary under Kayleigh McEnany. After Trump’s first term, she worked as the Communications Director for U.S. Representative Elise Stefanik from New York.
Congressional Campaign
In 2022, Leavitt ran for U.S. Congress in New Hampshire’s 1st district as a Republican. She won the GOP primary, making her the second member of Generation Z to win a congressional primary. Her campaign focused on conservative values, economic growth, and support for law enforcement, but she ultimately lost the general election to incumbent Chris Pappas.
White House Press Secretary
In late 2023, Leavitt joined Trump’s 2024 presidential campaign as National Press Secretary. She briefly took a leave of absence in July 2024 after giving birth to her son, but returned to work following an assassination attempt on Trump.
On November 15, 2024, President-elect Donald Trump announced that Leavitt would serve as White House Press Secretary, succeeding Karine Jean-Pierre. She will be the youngest person to hold this role in U.S. history.
