Tragic Plane Crash in Northeast Philadelphia: Six Dead, Multiple Injured

At 6:06 p.m. last night, a small medical service jet, a Learjet 55, took off from Philadelphia Northeast Airport, bound for Missouri. Just 3.5 miles from departure, the aircraft crashed near Cottman Avenue and Roosevelt Boulevard, striking a residential neighborhood and igniting multiple fires.

Firefighters arrived at 6:11 p.m. to find five homes and multiple vehicles engulfed in flames, with debris scattered across Cottman Avenue. A second and then a third alarm was struck, bringing over 150 firefighters to the scene. The fires were brought under control after approximately two hours.

Philadelphia Mayor Cherelle L. Parker confirmed today that all six individuals onboard the aircraft—including a pediatric patient, the patient’s mother, and four crew members—tragically lost their lives. Additionally, one person in a vehicle was killed as a result of the crash. At least 19 others sustained injuries and are receiving treatment at area hospitals.

The Northeast Philadelphia neighborhood is one of the largest Chinese communities in Greater Philadelphia. Several Chinese-owned properties were affected by the crash. A Chinese teenager narrowly escaped harm. According to Northeast Philadelphia Development Corporation (NPDC) Chairman Keith Xiao, the teenager’s vehicle was stopped at a red light at the time of the crash. It was the third car in line—while the two cars in front were severely damaged, likely resulting in fatalities. The teenager managed to escape in time, avoiding the worst of the disaster. He remains possible minor injury or psychological injury.

Mayor Parker expressed deep sorrow over the tragedy:
