October 15, 2024, Philadelphia—The satellite office for the Sixth District Council in Northeast Philadelphia officially opened today, aiming to enhance voter participation within the Chinese community. The establishment of this office marks a significant step in elevating the role of Chinese voters in Philadelphia’s political landscape and provides more convenient election services for the area’s rapidly growing Chinese population.
At the opening ceremony, several key figures from Philadelphia’s government and community leaders were present to deliver speeches. These included Philadelphia Election Office Chair Omar Sabir, City Commissioner Seth Bluestein, Sixth District Councilmember Michael J. Driscoll, and the only Asian community representatives invited to the ribbon-cutting ceremony—Wei Chen, the Director of Civic Engagement at the Asian American United (AAU), and Keith Xiao, the Chair of the Northeast Philadelphia Development Corporation (NPDC).
Omar Sabir emphasized the importance of the satellite office in promoting Chinese voter participation. He stated, “We must ensure that every voter has the opportunity to make their voice heard.”
City Commissioner Seth Bluestein added that government and community organizations must work together to ensure fair and accessible elections.
Councilmember Michael J. Driscoll remarked, “This is not only for the Chinese community but for our democratic system. Every voice matters.”
Wei Chen expressed, “We have long been actively promoting the engagement of the Chinese community in political affairs. The establishment of this satellite office is another step we are taking to ensure that Chinese voters can easily exercise their right to vote.”
Keith Xiao further stated, “We are committed to supporting the Chinese community to ensure they have the representation they deserve in elections.”
As the Chinese population in Northeast Philadelphia continues to grow, Chinese voters will undoubtedly play an increasingly important role in future elections. According to the 2020 census, the Chinese population in this area has surged, making it one of Philadelphia’s emerging major ethnic groups. In response to this demographic change, the Pennsylvania government has incorporated Chinese language options into the ballot services. The establishment of this satellite office provides a solid foundation for further enhancing political participation in the community.
