[VT Washington D.C. ] March 20, 2025 – President Donald J. Trump signed an executive order to officially begin the process of closing the Department of Education, aiming to return educational authority to the states. The move has garnered widespread support from governors, lawmakers, and educational organizations across the country.
“At the White House right now. Headed to see President Trump return control of education back to the states—where it belongs,” said Texas Governor Greg Abbott following the signing ceremony. Ohio Governor Mike DeWine added, “Every student, family, and community is different. By giving states more authority over education, we will have the flexibility to focus our efforts on tailoring an educational experience that is best for our children.”
The executive order was praised by education freedom advocates and various organizations. Lisa B. Nelson, CEO of the American Legislative Exchange Council, described the decision as “a long-overdue return of constitutional order” and “the natural, unstoppable evolution of the parental empowerment movement sparked amid the pandemic lockdowns.”
According to supporters, despite spending over $3 trillion over more than four decades, the Department of Education has shown little improvement in student achievement. The shift aims to allow states and local communities to develop educational policies better tailored to the specific needs of their students.
The order directs the Secretary of Education to take all necessary steps toward dismantling the department while ensuring continued support for essential programs.
