[VT – Washington, D.C.] On May 17, 2025 — President Donald J. Trump today issued a presidential proclamation declaring May 2025 as Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) Heritage Month. The proclamation honors the vital contributions of AAPI communities to the United States in areas including education, national security, public service, and culture.

In the proclamation, the President emphasized that America’s strength has always been rooted in the diverse backgrounds of its people. Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders have demonstrated resilience and dedication in their pursuit of the American Dream, and their legacy continues to enrich the nation.
President Trump highlighted the story of Lakshmi and Radhakrishna Chilukuri, who immigrated from India in the 1980s and devoted their lives to higher education. They raised two daughters, Usha and Shreya, instilling in them the values of hard work and perseverance. Their daughter, Usha, now serves as the Second Lady of the United States. The proclamation also recognized Tulsi Gabbard, a native of American Samoa and former service member, who currently serves as Director of National Intelligence. More than 77,000 Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders serve in the U.S. Armed Forces today.
“This month, we honor the proud legacy of Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders and their contributions to the vast constellation of our national triumphs,” the President stated. “They are woven into the fabric of our Republic, reminding us that the American spirit is one of resilience, independence, and the relentless pursuit of freedom and opportunity.”
The President called on all Americans to learn more about the rich histories and cultures of Asian Americans, Native Hawaiians, and Pacific Islanders, and to observe the month with appropriate programs and activities.
The designation of May as Asian/Pacific American Heritage Month was established by Congress under Public Law 102-450. Today’s proclamation reaffirms the federal government’s continued commitment to recognizing and celebrating the achievements of AAPI communities.
The official proclamation concludes:
“I, DONALD J. TRUMP, President of the United States of America, do hereby proclaim May 2025 as Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month.”
