Philadelphia Marks a New Milestone in International Relations: Namibia President Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah Visits with Mayor Cherelle Parker and Council President Kenyatta Johnson

[ VT September 25, 2025, Philadelphia] Dr. Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah, President of the Republic of Namibia and the country’s first female president, arrived in Philadelphia today. She was warmly welcomed at the Conversation Hall in Philadelphia City Hall by Mayor Cherelle Parker and City Council President Kenyatta Johnson. The historic visit aims to strengthen U.S.-Namibia relations and explore opportunities for collaboration in education, culture, and economic development.

The event was hosted by Philadelphia City Representative Jazelle Jones, who highlighted the historic significance of both Mayor Parker and President Nandi-Ndaitwah as trailblazing female leaders committed to public service and community development.

In her remarks, Mayor Parker emphasized that this visit marks the first time Philadelphia has formally welcomed a head of state for collaborative engagement. She expressed gratitude to Jazelle Jones, Chief of Staff Tiffany W. Thurman, Deputy Mayor Vanessa Garrett Harley, Esq., and City Hall staff for their efforts in organizing the visit. Mayor Parker also acknowledged the support of City Council President Kenyatta Johnson and all attending city council members.

City Council President Kenyatta Johnson highlighted potential areas of cooperation between Philadelphia and Namibia, including port and air logistics, educational exchanges, and economic development. He mentioned plans to establish a sister city relationship, promote student exchange programs, and advance business partnerships with a concrete timeline. Johnson also recognized City Council Health Committee Chair Councilwoman Dr. Nina Ahmad, staff members Michele DiPietro and legal counsel Brionna Wakefield, Esq., Chief of Staff John D. Christmas, Esq., and Hon.Michael A. Griffin for their contributions to organizing the historic visit.

President Nandi-Ndaitwah expressed deep gratitude for the warm reception from Philadelphia’s city government. She outlined Namibia’s achievements in democracy, freedom, and economic development and proposed concrete collaboration initiatives with Philadelphia, including:

  • Establishing direct air connections between Philadelphia and Namibia to facilitate passenger and cargo transport.
  • Utilizing Philadelphia’s wholesale produce market to introduce Namibian agricultural products such as table grapes, fish, beef, and table salt to the U.S. market.
  • Promoting educational exchanges, clean energy innovation, and cultural diplomacy.
  • Exploring the establishment of sister city or regional partnerships between Philadelphia and Namibian cities or regions.

President Nandi-Ndaitwah emphasized that these initiatives represent not only economic opportunities but also a bridge for long-term friendship and mutual understanding between the peoples of Namibia and Philadelphia. “May the friendship between Namibia and Philadelphia continue to thrive for generations to come,” she said.

The Namibian delegation accompanying President Nandi-Ndaitwah included the Minister of International Relations and Trade, the First Gentleman, the Ambassador to the United States, senior presidential advisors, and the Executive Director of the Ministry of International Relations and Trade.

The visit concluded with a group photo and cordial interactions between both sides, marking the successful beginning of a historic partnership between Philadelphia and Namibia.
