Philadelphia Health Department Warns of Potential Measles Exposure, Urges Vaccination

[VT Philadelphia, PA] — March 12, 2025, The Philadelphia Department of Public Health and the Pennsylvania Department of Health have issued a public notification regarding potential measles exposure at two locations in the city. An individual who recently traveled abroad and contracted measles visited the following places during the specified times:

Potential Exposure Locations & Times

  • South Philadelphia Health & Literacy Center
    1700 South Broad Street, Philadelphia, PA 19145
    • Friday, March 7, 2025: 10:45 a.m. – 2:40 p.m.
    • Saturday, March 8, 2025: 9:05 a.m. – 1:20 p.m.
      (Exposure risk applies to CHOP Pediatric Primary Care South Philadelphia and Health Department Health Center #2, but not to the South Philadelphia Library.)
  • CHOP Emergency Department
    3401 Civic Center Boulevard, Philadelphia, PA 19104
    • Monday, March 10, 2025: 7:55 a.m. – 10:15 a.m.

Authorities confirm that this case is unrelated to recent measles reports in Montgomery County or other outbreaks in the U.S.

Health Officials Emphasize Vaccination

Dr. Palak Raval-Nelson, Health Commissioner of Philadelphia, stated:
“This case does not pose a threat to the general public. However, declining vaccination rates increase the risk of exposure for those who are unprotected. We strongly encourage vaccination to prevent future cases.”

Dr. Mayssa Abuali, Medical Director of the Immunization Program, added:
“The two-dose MMR vaccine is 97% effective and provides lifelong immunity. We urge travelers to consult their healthcare provider about early MMR vaccination, especially for children aged 6-11 months.”

Recommendations for Exposed Individuals

  • Visitors to CHOP Emergency Department on March 10 should receive an MMR vaccine by March 13 or quarantine until March 31.
  • Visitors to South Philadelphia Health & Literacy Center on March 7 or 8 should consult a doctor and quarantine until March 27 or 28, respectively.
