[VT Harrisburg, PA] February 26, 2025 – Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro led a Lunar New Year celebration at the state capitol, highlighting the state’s commitment to diversity and inclusion. The event, organized in collaboration with the Governor’s Office and the Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) Affairs Advisory Commission, gathered officials, community leaders, and residents to honor this significant cultural tradition.
Governor Shapiro Commends AAPI Contributions

The celebration commenced with opening remarks by Razin Karu, Executive Director of the AAPI Affairs Advisory Commission, who welcomed attendees. Chen Wei, Chair of the Commission, played a key role in organizing the event.

Governor Shapiro, standing alongside members of the AAPI Affairs Advisory Commission, expressed his appreciation for their efforts and commended the contributions of the AAPI community. He emphasized that AAPI residents have played a vital role in Pennsylvania’s development across various fields, including arts, business, education, government, media, medicine, science, and technology. Many also serve in the military, law enforcement, and as community leaders assisting new immigrant families in adapting to life in the U.S.
Addressing Challenges and Promoting Inclusion
Governor Shapiro acknowledged the rising incidents of attacks targeting specific communities, not just in Pennsylvania but across the country. He condemned discrimination based on appearance, origin, beliefs, or sexual orientation, reaffirming Pennsylvania’s commitment to being a welcoming and inclusive state.
“Our state is built on the values of openness and acceptance. Despite the challenges we face, we will continue to stand united, rejecting division and embracing diversity,” said Governor Shapiro.
Policy Initiatives for Greater Accessibility
As part of his administration’s commitment to inclusivity, Governor Shapiro announced the appointment of Pennsylvania’s first-ever Federal Language Access Coordinator to ensure residents receive state services regardless of their primary language. Additionally, he revealed that the next Adjutant General of the Pennsylvania National Guard—set to be sworn in on Friday morning—will be a member of the AAPI community, marking a historic milestone for the state.
