New York mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani picks former U.S. labor leader Julie Su as deputy mayor for economic justice

[VT I New York City, December 19 2025] New York mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani announced on social media that Julie Su will join his incoming administration as New York City’s deputy mayor for economic justice.

According to the announcement, the position is a newly created role within the city government. Su’s appointment is expected to take effect after Mamdani formally takes office. No start date has been announced.

Julie Su previously served in the U.S. Department of Labor, including as deputy secretary and, for a period, acting secretary. No further details about the scope of the deputy mayor role have been released by the city.
