Nancy Pelosi Announces She Will Not Seek Re-election to Congress

[VT – Washington, D.C. November 6, 2025] Nancy Pelosi, former Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives and senior Democratic leader, announced on Wednesday that she will not seek re-election in 2026, ending her 40-year career in Congress. Pelosi is the first woman in U.S. history to serve as House Speaker and has been a central figure in Democratic politics for decades.

Pelosi was first elected to Congress in 1987, representing California’s 12th Congressional District. During her tenure, she played a key role in major legislative efforts, including healthcare reform and the impeachment proceedings against former President Donald Trump. In a statement posted on X (formerly Twitter), Pelosi said:

“I will not run for another term in Congress. I am grateful for the opportunity to serve and look forward to completing my final year in office.”

Her announcement comes amid increasing calls within the Democratic Party for generational leadership change and marks a significant moment in U.S. politics. Pelosi’s long career has been defined by her influence on major policy debates, her leadership in the House, and her role as a prominent voice for progressive issues.

While she is stepping down from Congress, Pelosi has not indicated plans to completely retire from public life, leaving open the possibility of continued involvement in political and civic activities.
