[VT Philadelphia PA] May 2, 2025 – Mayor Cherelle L. Parker has appointed Karen Fegely as Acting Commerce Director for the City of Philadelphia, effective May 1, 2025. Fegely succeeds former Commerce Director Alba Martinez and will now lead the Commerce Department’s critical work in business attraction and retention, local economic growth, access to capital, and neighborhood development.
Fegely, a key figure within the department’s Office of Policy and Strategic Initiatives, has played a vital role in building partnerships with the business community, economic development organizations, and elected officials. Under her leadership, her team is advancing Mayor Parker’s PHL Open for Business initiative, aimed at streamlining services and expanding support for businesses across the city.
“Karen’s deep expertise and passion for economic development make her the right choice to step into this role and deliver results from day one,” said Mayor Parker. “I am confident that her leadership will advance our vision for a thriving, inclusive business environment in Philadelphia. Her commitment to community engagement and equitable growth will be essential as we work to strengthen opportunities for businesses citywide.”
In response to her appointment, Fegely stated, “I am truly honored to serve as Acting Commerce Director. My commitment to Philadelphia and its residents drives my daily work to advance inclusive economic growth in every neighborhood. Alongside my team and partners, I look forward to supporting opportunities where businesses and entrepreneurs can thrive and continue to enrich our city’s diverse and vibrant communities.”
Fegely brings over 20 years of experience across public and private sectors. She previously led the Commerce Department’s Office of Neighborhood Economic Development and Business Services, where she successfully launched community development projects, wealth-building initiatives, and small business support programs — with a strong focus on serving marginalized communities.
The Parker Administration noted that updates will continue regarding leadership transitions at the Commerce Department, including the upcoming search for a permanent director.
