Former Labor Secretaries Criticize Trump’s Economic Policies, Urge Focus on American Families

[VT Washington, D.C. ] April 4, 2025 – In a press call today, Democratic National Committee (DNC) Chair Ken Martin, former Secretary of Labor Robert Reich, and former Acting Secretary of Labor Julie Su criticized the economic policies of the Trump administration, highlighting the negative impacts on American working families and the broader economy.

This press call was part of the DNC’s newly launched “People’s Cabinet” initiative, aimed at providing the American public with reliable, accurate information about the ongoing impact of Trump’s administration. The initiative focuses on experts and leaders who address key issues as Trump continues to appoint unqualified billionaires, media personalities, and major donors to key positions.

During the call, Ken Martin emphasized that many Americans did not choose the economic trajectory under Trump. “They did not sign up for an economic meltdown. They didn’t sign up for cuts to their healthcare, nursing homes, public schools, and Social Security,” Martin stated. He explained that the DNC’s “People’s Cabinet” was created to offer communities the critical information they need in this challenging time.

Former Secretary of Labor Robert Reich also addressed the economic concerns under the Trump administration, noting that the U.S. is currently facing a crisis. “Not only do we have an employment report that shows manufacturing jobs are almost stagnant, but the Labor Department also adjusted its figures downward for the last few months. I’ve rarely seen something like this happen,” Reich remarked.

Julie Su further criticized Trump’s manufacturing policies, pointing out that when he left office, manufacturing jobs had decreased by 200,000 during his first term. “Bringing back industry requires more than just a blunt instrument like tariffs,” Su said. “It requires strategic, sound policy decisions, not just throwing out terms and hoping people don’t pay attention.”

The press call focused on the economic consequences of Trump’s policies, particularly for working-class Americans, and underscored the need for more thoughtful and strategic approaches to economic growth and stability.
