2024 DNC: AAPI Caucus Chair Bel Leong-Hong Calls for Unity and Action in Exclusive Interview: “We Can’t Stay Silent Any Longer!”

August 23, 2024, Chicago, Illinois – Following the 2024 Democratic National Convention (DNC), Bel Leong-Hong, Chair of the Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) Caucus, sat down with our publication for an exclusive interview, urging the AAPI community to actively participate in this year’s presidential election. She emphasized the importance of AAPI voters uniting as a force for change, particularly at this historic moment.

Leong-Hong began by expressing pride in the growing political influence of the AAPI community. She highlighted the historical significance of this year’s DNC, marking the first time a presidential ticket has included both an Asian American and an African American woman. She underscored Kamala Harris’s position not just as a capable leader, but also as a member of the AAPI community, someone who deeply understands AAPI culture and values.

“We can’t stay silent any longer,” Leong-Hong stated. “This election is about more than just politics; it’s about our very existence. Kamala Harris represents our voice. She understands our culture, respects our values. We must vote for her to secure a brighter future for all of us.”

During the interview, we were fortunate to encounter another prominent figure within the Democratic Party – Roger Lau. As Deputy Executive Director of the Democratic National Committee (DNC), Lau is one of the highest-ranking Asian American leaders within the party. His presence not only instills hope for the AAPI community but also showcases the growing influence of Asian Americans in American politics.

“Roger is a source of pride for us,” Leong-Hong commented. “His leadership ensures that we have a voice at the highest levels. He understands our needs and is fighting for our rights. He is one of our most crucial allies within the party.”

Lau echoed this sentiment in the interview, emphasizing the undeniable power of the AAPI electorate and the impact their participation will have on the election results. He encouraged AAPI voters to vote actively and protect their rights and future.

Leong-Hong went on to criticize former President Donald Trump, recalling the wave of hate crimes against Asian Americans that erupted in 2020 after Trump labeled the coronavirus the “Wuhan virus” and the “China virus.” She poignantly spoke about the attacks against elderly Asian women, many of whom were shoved to the ground and physically assaulted.

“We can’t forget those elderly Asian women who were pushed to the ground and attacked. If Trump is re-elected, such tragedies will happen again. He doesn’t respect our existence, and his policies will once again put us in danger,” she said.

Leong-Hong specifically addressed a concerning clause in Trump’s “Project 2025” – the proposal to revoke birthright citizenship. This policy would directly threaten countless AAPI families by stripping their children of their citizenship.

“This is not just an attack on our rights, it is a denial of our existence,” Leong-Hong stated. “If this policy is implemented, our families will be torn apart, and our future will be stolen.”

Taking Action, Voting for the Future

In closing, Leong-Hong urged every member of the AAPI community to take action, vote for Kamala Harris, and ensure that Trump does not return to office.

“This is not just about politics; it’s about our survival,” she declared. “This election determines the fate of our way of life, our property, and our values. We must stand up, vote for the candidate who represents our values, and ensure that our future is not destroyed.”

Leong-Hong’s powerful message resonated deeply with countless AAPI leaders and voters. Her call to action goes beyond a political slogan; it is a plea for a better future for herself, her family, and her community. Under her leadership, the AAPI community is uniting to fight for a more just and inclusive America.
